About our honoree:

Julie J. Sprengel is the President and Chief Executive Officer for CommonSpirit Health’s California Division, providing executive leadership to healthcare delivery systems spanning 650 miles from as far north as Mt. Shasta to as far south as San Bernardino. Sprengel brings more than 20 years of valuable, results-driven experience and has coupled it with a commitment to ensuring the health and well-being for nearly ten million Californians.

In her role as President of the largest Division in CommonSpirit, Sprengel leads a fully integrated delivery network generating $12 billion in annual revenues with $1.5 billion in community investments through charity care, community benefits, and government program services. Sprengel has successfully led innovative and strategic planning processes focused on workforce recovery, investment in graduate medical education and nurse residency programs, enhancing quality and safety, the patient experience, employee engagement, and the implementation of sustainable growth initiatives. Currently, Sprengel is leading the management of multiple major hospital campus expansion and rebuild projects to further meet the growing needs of California’s diverse communities.

Sprengel oversees nearly 40,000 dedicated employees and 10,000 physicians, encompassing 31 acute-care hospitals, and more than 125 ambulatory care sites, including physician clinics, urgent care centers, surgery centers, imaging centers, post-acute and home health agencies. Sprengel has implemented Value Based Care programs that provide services to more than one million people under capitated and value based care agreements. With responsibility for both limited and global risk, Sprengel has embraced the goal of improving delivery of care, clinical outcomes, and overall health for our most vulnerable populations.

In an effort to improve access to care through physician alignment across underserved areas, Sprengel’s facilities manage more than a dozen Graduate Medical Education (GME) programs, which provide unique hands-on learning opportunities and clinical experience for the next generation of physicians. Sprengel helped pave the way for historic partnerships with Charles R. Drew University School of Medicine and Science, where she serves on the Board of Trustees, and separately, the Morehouse School of Medicine, to expand GME training for BIPOC. Additionally, Sprengel serves on the Executive Board of Trustees for the California Hospital Association (CHA) and speaks frequently as an advocate for the benefits of a population health framework and diversification of providers to improve clinical outcomes and overall health.

Prior to rejoining Dignity Health in 2016, she served as both Chief Operating Officer and Chief Executive Officer at Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Burbank, California. Sprengel began her career as an emergency room staff nurse and served as director of emergency services for several organizations. She has been named to the Los Angeles Business Journal’s Most Influential People in LA and the Women of Influence in Health Care two years in a row (2022, 2023). Sprengel holds a master’s in business administration and a bachelor’s degree in management from Pepperdine University, and a nursing degree from the Los Angeles County/University of Southern California School of Nursing.
